Our Workmanship Warranty
We stand behind our work — plainly and in writing. Every project is covered by a 12-month workmanship warranty, and this page explains exactly what that means.
12 Months, In Writing, Transferable
Unless your proposal says otherwise, American Asphalt warrants the workmanship of every project for 12 months from substantial completion. If something we built fails because we built it wrong, we make it right.
Sell the property during the warranty period? Coverage transfers to the new owner for the time remaining, as long as the project was paid in full.
Your proposal is the controlling document: anything specific we've agreed to there takes precedence over the standard terms on this page. This warranty covers our workmanship; materials themselves are covered by their manufacturers' own warranties.
Coverage by Service
Different work fails in different ways, so each type of work has its own coverage — and its own honest limits.
New Asphalt Paving
Workmanship in placement, rolling, compaction, and joints, built to the standards in your proposal.
Installed thickness is verified against the specification: the project average within 1/4 inch, and any single measurement within 3/8 inch.
Overlays & Resurfacing
Workmanship in surface preparation and overlay placement.
An overlay follows the shape of the pavement beneath it. Cracks that reflect up from movement in the old surface are a known behavior of overlays, not a defect.
Patching & Repair
Workmanship within the boundaries of the contracted repair area.
The surrounding pavement outside the repair limits — and whatever conditions exist under it — is not part of the patch warranty.
Excavation, Base & Grading
Workmanship in excavation, base placement, compaction, and finish grading.
We grade to roughly a 2% drainage slope as standard. That sheds water the way pavement should, but no asphalt surface can be guaranteed completely free of ponding.
Sealcoating, Crack Sealing & Striping
Workmanship in applying sealcoat, crack sealant, striping, and pavement markings.
These are protective, preventative treatments — they extend the life of your pavement but are not structural repairs and do not rebuild a failing surface.
What's Not Covered
A workmanship warranty covers the quality of what we built — not everything that can happen to pavement afterward. The warranty does not cover damage or failure caused by:
- Pre-existing, hidden, or subsurface conditions we did not build
- Natural soil movement, settlement, groundwater, frost, or erosion
- Work performed by others, before or after our project
- Traffic or loads heavier than the pavement was designed for
- Improper use, neglected maintenance, or blocked drainage
- Weather events, accidents, utility cuts, and damage after completion
- Normal wear, aging, oxidation, and minor cosmetic variation
Minor cosmetic variation that doesn't affect how the pavement performs isn't a defect. And skipping recommended maintenance doesn't automatically void your warranty — a claim is only reduced to the extent that neglect actually contributed to the problem. American Asphalt's responsibility under this warranty is repair or replacement of the affected work; we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages.
How to Make a Claim

Tell us promptly. Report the issue before your warranty period ends and within 30 days of noticing it — the sooner we see a problem, the easier it is to fix.

Send the details. Include the project address, what you're seeing and where, when you first noticed it, photos if you have them, and anything relevant about recent traffic, loads, or maintenance.

Give us a look. We need a reasonable opportunity to inspect and correct a covered defect before anyone else works on it — repairs by others without that chance can reduce or void coverage, except in a genuine emergency.

We make it right. If it's covered, we repair or replace the affected work — our choice of remedy, our crews, no runaround.
Caring for Your New Asphalt
New asphalt cures over time, and a little care in the first months makes a big difference. Keep vehicles off the surface for the closure period we give you at completion, avoid sharp power-steering turns while the surface is young, and keep heavy trucks and dumpsters off residential-grade pavement.
